Join us at the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum for an author talk with Maurice Isserman as he discusses his new book The Winter Army: The World War II Odyssey of the 10th Mountain Division, America’s Elite Alpine Warriors. The evening will include a presentation by Isserman, a question and answer session, and a meet and greet book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
Maurice Isserman, PhD, is the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History of Hamilton College. He is the author of many books on topics ranging from the American Civil War to mountaineering. The two most pertinent to us as mountaineering museum are Fallen Giants a History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes and Continental Divide: A History of American Mountaineering. The former won the Banff Mountain Book Festival prize for best mountaineering history.
The book starts with the creation of the division and follows it through the end of the war. For me the book was a refreshing read that was difficult to put down. Isserman did due diligence with his research which allowed him to tell the story often times using the words of the soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division borrowed directly from their letters or diary entires. This makes the book more personal and easier to digest if you aren’t a military historian. This book is a must read if you are an avid consumer of all thing 10th Mountain Division related or if you are you’re trying to pick just one book to learn about the division’s history.
The event will be Wednesday November 13, 2019. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here. All proceeds benefit the Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum.
